Ngatokimatawhaorua is believed to be the largest war canoe (waka) ever built and can carry 80 paddlers and 55 passengers. It was named after the canoe which brought the Maori people from Hawaiki and was captained by Nukutawhiti, the grandson of Kupe, the Polynesian discoverer of New Zealand.
